Ola! from Playa del Carmen, Mexico!
We were so lucky to visit Toms family in America in November and in case you were wondering if it was just out of the blue or for a special occasion, well yes it was only the most beautiful couples wedding, which took place in Mexico! You read that right, MEXICO!
There was a stomach bug going around in the family a few days before we all boarded a plane to Cancun, and as strong as I thought my body was, my immune system failed me the night before our flight and I spent the entire night vomiting – literally every hour, and then boarded our flight the next morning with zero sleep and still feeling absolutely awful. But I made it, in one piece, and feeling a little better by the time we arrived in the VERY humid Cancun, Mexico!
We were driven along with some of the other wedding guests to the Andaz Mayokoba where we were welcomed with a hibiscus infused cocktail (given my state I opted for alcohol free) in the resort lobby which was a gorgeous open area with a water fountain in the middle where we were all given a stone to throw in and make a wish. Such a special welcome to the most beautiful place.
We were escorted to our room which was unbelievable, this is the ADA room and was just perfect.
The Andaz has a lot to offer, from being driven around the resort in golf carts, to opting to cycle with resort bikes placed all around the resort, and also a nature walk. There’s a golf course, a river boat cruise, gorgeous pools and the beach was amazing, but the high light for everyone was the breakfast every morning which was out of this world with donuts, pastries, fruits, home made granola, your normal English, guac (with every meal), tortillas, meats, cheeses, smoothies …… (it was so great I didn’t even get a photo!)
We were up early for breakfast and already boiling hot and humid so headed straight for the beach or the beach pool every morning where we lay in the sun drinking Pina Coladas until lunch time when we headed back to the room for a nap under the air-conditioning or a swim in our private pool or did an activity like the boat ride or the nature trail and then headed out with the family for dinner on the resort.
The wedding festivities started on the Thursday night already with a bonfire and smores at the Danielle and Mikey’s beachfront bungalow. It was surreal, a real movie moment and a great time for all the cousins and their partners to spend time with each other after years of being apart.
The Friday we headed into the city of Playa del Carmen where I bought the most gorgeous embroidered bits from street vendors and markets and we had dinner at a restaurant inside caves and forest trees and waterfalls (I think these were all man made but set up a great atmosphere).
Saturday was the Rehearsal Dinner, my first ever Rehearsal Dinner (this isn’t a tradition in South Africa or London), and it was a FIESTA theme. It was all done up so incredibly well, at this point I couldn’t even imagine the wedding set up!
And then the day arrived and it’s probably better shown in pictures so I’ll get straight to it, but every detail was thought of, and happiness radiated throughout the venue the entire evening. A special moment to have been a part of and an experience I will never forget.
